MLOps Services Explained: What a Provider Should Deliver After the Model Is Built

MLOps services are the engineering work that keeps machine learning models useful after they are built: packaging and deploying them, monitoring their inputs and predictions, retraining them when data changes, and keeping a record of which model made which decision. Many ML projects succeed in a notebook and then quietly fail in production, because the data the model sees in real life drifts away from the data it was trained on, or because nobody owns the pipeline that feeds it. MLOps is the discipline that prevents that. This guide explains the components, what a good provider should hand over, and how to size the investment to your situation.

⚡ Quick Summary
  • MLOps covers deployment, monitoring, retraining, versioning and governance of ML models.
  • The biggest production risk is data drift: real-world inputs change and accuracy falls silently.
  • Deliverables should include pipelines as code, dashboards, alerts, runbooks and a retraining process.
  • Small teams with one or two models often need "minimum viable MLOps", not a full platform.
  • Ask providers how you will run the system without them.

What MLOps is and is not

MLOps borrows from DevOps, the practice of automating software delivery and operations, and adds the parts that are specific to machine learning: models depend on data as much as on code, they degrade without any code changing, and their behaviour must often be explained to regulators or customers. MLOps is not a single tool you buy. It is a set of practices, pipelines and responsibilities, supported by tools that fit your scale.

The components of MLOps

1. Reproducible training

Training code, data versions, parameters and environment are recorded so any model can be rebuilt. Without this, nobody can say why version 3 behaves differently from version 2.

2. Model registry and versioning

A central record of every model version, its training data, evaluation results and approval status. Production should only run registered, approved versions.

3. Deployment

Models are packaged and released through an automated pipeline, as a real-time API, a batch job, or embedded in an application or device. Good pipelines support staged rollouts, such as shadow mode or canary releases, and fast rollback.

4. Monitoring

Beyond uptime and latency, ML monitoring watches:

  • Data drift: are input distributions changing compared with training data?
  • Prediction drift: are outputs shifting unexpectedly?
  • Performance: where ground truth arrives later, how accurate were past predictions?
  • Data quality: missing fields, out-of-range values, schema changes upstream.

5. Retraining

A defined process, scheduled or triggered by drift, to retrain, evaluate against the current model, and promote only if the new version is better on agreed metrics.

6. Governance

Access control, audit logs of predictions where needed, documentation of intended use and limitations, and review processes for models that affect people, such as credit, insurance or hiring decisions.

Deliverables to expect

A provider engagement should leave you with tangible assets, not just a running system:

  • Training and deployment pipelines defined as code, in your repository.
  • A model registry with documented versions and evaluation results.
  • Monitoring dashboards and alerts with agreed thresholds.
  • Runbooks: what to do when an alert fires, how to roll back, how to retrain.
  • Model documentation: purpose, data used, known limitations, evaluation metrics.
  • Infrastructure in your cloud account, with access you control.
  • A handover or training session for your team.

How much MLOps do you need?

SituationSensible level
One model, batch predictions, low riskVersioned training script, scheduled job, simple data checks and a monthly accuracy review
A few models serving an application in real timeAutomated deployment, registry, drift and latency monitoring, documented retraining
Many models or regulated decisionsFull platform: feature store, automated retraining, approval workflows, prediction audit logs

Over-engineering is a real risk. A small team that adopts a heavyweight platform for one model can spend more time maintaining tools than improving the model. Start with the minimum that makes failures visible and recoverable, and grow.

Evaluating an MLOps provider

  1. Ask them to describe a model they monitored that drifted, and what happened next.
  2. Ask which tools they would use at your scale, and why not something bigger or smaller.
  3. Confirm everything is deployed in your accounts and repositories.
  4. Ask how your team will operate the system after the engagement.
  5. Ask how they handle security and personal data in training and logs.
  6. Ask for a phased plan with a useful first milestone, not a big-bang platform build.

FAQ

What are MLOps services?

They are engineering services that deploy, monitor, retrain and govern machine learning models in production so they stay accurate and reliable.

What is the difference between MLOps and DevOps?

DevOps automates software delivery and operations. MLOps adds data and model versioning, drift monitoring, retraining and model governance, because ML systems change behaviour when data changes.

Why do ML models degrade in production?

Real-world data shifts over time, upstream systems change, and user behaviour evolves. Without monitoring, accuracy can drop without any visible error.

Do small companies need MLOps?

They need a minimum version: reproducible training, a simple deployment process, data checks and periodic accuracy reviews. Full platforms are for larger or regulated portfolios.
